A Town With History
Stony Plain has its own unique history separate from the big city of Edmonton. Today, the motto is "The Town With the Painted Past" because of all the beautiful murals that can be found throughout Stony Plain. The murals range from small, intricate paintings to vast murals that depict the rich history of the town. The murals are so popular that the town even operates guided tours.
And just outside of town is the Stony Plain and Parkland Pioneer Museum that features an old blacksmith shop, authentic historical houses, a sawmill, a simple wooden cabin, a one-room school, a historic street, and a lovely tea house where you can enjoy delicious foods and drinks made by the all-volunteer team.
The Town of Stony Plain was officially founded in 1892. Since then, it has served as the gateway to the west. The town celebrates its heritage every summer with horse and wagon mural tours. There are also several public art installations, including outdoor pianos that are set up in three different parks across the town.
Stony Plain has twinned with the Japanese city of Shikaoi since 1985, and the international exchange programs allows Stony Plain residents to meet people from Japan and learn more about Japanese culture.
Stony Plain also maintains a busy events calendar with plenty of exciting activities for children and adults of all ages to enjoy. The town also erects a huge Christmas tree right in the center of downtown, one of the most popular events of the year.
