IN: Earthy Tones

You can achieve this look by reupholstering furniture or simply by placing an earth-toned cover on your couches.

The onslaught of “Dance Like No One's Watching” posters are a perfect example of why these are on their way out - redundant and not at all unique. While these art pieces are still great motivators to be hung on your office wall, it’s become cliché to hang them up at home. Consider replacing these pieces with a different form of art, or if you’re really adventurous, some art inspired wallpaper.
IN: Make it Green
Out with the blue, in with the green - dark green to be specific. Experts are saying green paint and furniture will replace the various blue colours that have risen in prominence over the past several years. Designers say this growing trend will provide more depth to the room, especially when paired with those earthier colours we mentioned before.
OUT: Subway Tiles
This design trend has experienced a similar fate as the rise of copper in home decor - its popularity brought about its demise. Popular in bathrooms, as well as its use for the backsplash in kitchens, the subway tile look provided an affordable and dynamic look to the home. But like most trends that fade, designers say it’s become an overused design technique.
IN: Repurposed Furniture
With this growing trend, what is old is new again. Whether it’s an old metal tractor seat repurposed into a stool, an old bench converted into a place for shoes, or a classic trunk used for a coffee table, there are so many ways to repurpose furniture. So before you get rid of your furniture, think of ways you could reuse it.
OUT: Copper Homewares
It was the initial popularity of this last item that has led to its decline in position as it relates to home decor. Once copper became popular, stores were filled with cheap and shiny pieces made of imitation copper. It became a passé trend once everyone was filling their homes with these items. Expect a shift from copper to dark steels and other metals.
IN: Fancy Bed Boards
While there are been many trends over the years that embrace a minimalist philosophy, this next trend is a noted departure. Extravagant headboards are growing in popularity, especially those that are upholstered. This look brings a very personalized touch to your bedroom, as you can pick the size and shape of your headboard, as well the materials it’s made from.
The best part of this trend is you don’t need a professional to create it for you. You can build an upholstered headboard yourself just the way you want it.
OUT: Marble Homewares
While marble countertops and floors are very popular (and probably will be for a long time to come), marble homewares including candle holders, flower pots and other items have run their course. Designers expect to see these items replaced with ones made of timber, clay or wicker.
