No matter which new community you may call home, there are plenty of activities to keep your family busy. From Windermere to Cy Becker, you have plenty of choices for low-cost (or free!) activities for all ages, skill levels and abilities.

You will find yourself only minutes away from a number community recreation centres. The leisure facilities offer a multitude of activities including swim classes, gym facilities, indoor ice arenas, saunas, steam rooms and running tracks.

You can even find child minding services and indoor playgrounds, so everyone can have a good time! Each centre is unique in the services it offers and they are definitely worth investigating.

So let's tour around the city and see what each area has to offer us!

    North Edmonton

New communities such as Cy Becker and Newcastle have several recreation centres to enjoy. The Clareview Community Recreation Centre is one of the city’s newest facilities and includes a leisure pool, a children’s pool, a fitness centre, a walking-jogging track, a gymnasium and an arena.

This rec centre is more than team-sport friendly as it boasts several indoor courts for basketball and volleyball teams, seven sports fields (including soccer fields and baseball diamonds).

You can also check out the Castledowns YMCA or Londonderry Recreation Centre for swimming, summer camps and more.

    Southeast Edmonton

Those living a little further southeast in areas such as Laurel Crossing and Tamarack Common also have access to a host of recreational amenities.

For starters, there’s the Meadows Community Recreation Centre, only steps away from Tamarack Common. This brand new state-of-the-art facility features a pool, a premier fitness centre, a gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, two NHL-sized rinks, soccer fields and ball diamonds. Anyone preferring a work out for their brain can also enjoy the Edmonton Public Library, also located in the facility.

Residents also benefit from the Mill Woods Recreation Centre is just minutes west of Laurel Crossing and has drop-in fitness schedules, a wave pool, racquet courts, ice arena, indoor playground and childminding services.

    Southwest Edmonton

Crimson in Creekwood Chapelle, Langdale in Windemere, Ambleside South, and Glenridding Heights have a wealth of recreational opportunities available with several arenas and leisure centres located throughout the area

For those of you who love their ice-time, there are five indoor areas available in Heritage Valley with all of them offering skating availability throughout the year. The George S. Hughes South Side Arena offers skinny hockey as well as drop-in public skating.

The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre are just a few minutes northeast of Windermere and well worth checking out. While the arena is large and has many ice activities, the centre has plenty of other amenities including an aquatic centre with a salt-water pool, a fitness centre and track and three full-size gymnasiums. There are also indoor playgrounds and child-minding services available.

These types of specialty classes can also be found periodically at local centres including Clareview, Commonwealth, Terwillegar and The Meadows. These facilities are known to carry a wide variety of programs. You can check the facility’s website for a list of upcoming classes.

    Bedroom Communities

Heading back up north, we turn our eyes to Fort Saskatchewan with some lovely new communities including Sienna and Forest Ridge in Westpark. Forest Ridge is within walking distance to Pryce Alderson Park with a spray park and ball diamonds right in the community itself. Also in Fort Saskatchewan is the Dow Centennial Centre (with a pool and a games den!) and the Jubilee Recreation Centre (where you can skate or play a round of golf), both with fantastic programs for all ages.

If you're looking to the east, then you'd be heading to Sherwood Park and the community of Summerwood. Millennium Place has all of your recreational needs taken care of. You want to swim with the kids? Done. Get in a quick workout? You're good to go. Let the kids burn off some energy in a safe place? Take them to the gymnasium.

rec-activities-dino-park-leduc.pngAs you head south there are three bedroom communities to take a look at:

One more area to go - west.

There are some fantastic neighbourhoods in Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, including Hawthorne at Heather Glen, Springate at Spruce Ridge, Lake Westerra, Silverstone, and Southcreek, just to name a few!

And when we talk about recreation we just have to talk about the Tri Leisure Centre in Spruce Grove! Multiple pools and a waterslide, two NHL-sized arenas, two indoor fields with multiple flooring options, a sprung-floor gymnasium, the Children's Play Centre with indoor playground - this really is a full-service rec centre!

You also have the Fuhr Sports Park, the Centennial Arena, and a choice of gorgeous golf courses to choose from.

You don’t have to buy a home in an older community to enjoy a wide variety of fun activities. New developing neighbourhoods ensure convenient access to all recreational amenities for any age and skill level. As each neighbourhood boasts its own distinct set of activities, events, programs and top-notch facilities, you’re sure to discover something no matter where you choose to call home.
