After the long, cold winter months, you’re likely looking forward to soaking up some vitamin D. But you’re not the only one eagerly awaiting a nice refresher, it’s just what your home needs, too!

While home maintenance may not make your list of things to look forward to this spring, the end result will be worth it. The following checklist can help you finish the job in no time.

    Inside

    Inspect

Start your home maintenance process by taking a walk through your home, making note of anything that needs your attention. Check that your appliances are working properly, check under the sinks in your kitchen and bathroom for any leaks, and for any other issues in need of repair.

There may be a few systems in your home that use filters that must be replaced every so often. This may include your heating, cooling, and water systems, as well as your kitchen’s hood range. Now is an opportune time to switch their filters out for new ones. This will give you better quality filtration and could increase the longevity of these systems.

    Floors and Walls

In addition to cleaning, fix areas of worn or missing grout between floor and backsplash tiles. Look for any damage or paint peeling on walls and doors, and scuffs or damage to baseboards and crown moulding that will need to be refinished.

    Window Wash

To truly embrace spring, you’ll want to thoroughly wash your windows (and sills.) You’ll want to clean them from both the inside and the outside of your home to really let that sunshine in! If your windows are hard to reach, hiring a professional may be your best bet.

    Outside

    Inspect

The winter months can take a toll on various parts of your home’s exterior. Do a thorough inspection around your property. Keep an eye out for things such as shingle shifting on your roof, or cracks in your foundation. These are issues you’ll likely need to hire a professional to repair.

You want your home to look as good as it did the day you bought it. For the exterior of the home, a good pressure wash can work wonders to bring back that shine. This is also important to prevent mold from growing on your siding. If you feel your home could use a little extra TLC in this case, consider hiring a pressure wash specialist to clean your home’s exterior with professional power.

    Patio Touch-Up

If you have a patio and/or a deck - whether in the front or rear of your home - you’ll want to give them a little love at this time. Check for any areas that may need special attention, such as soft or rotting wood that will need replacing. Otherwise, a generous coat of wood treatment or stain can go a long way with increasing the life span of your wood (and upping the curb appeal!).

    Gutters and Downspouts

Months of snow can often lead to a build-up of debris in your gutters and downspouts. Clean them out, and then run a hose through them to ensure they’re working properly. If you notice any leaks, use caulking to seal them immediately.

    A Little Landscaping

You may have gotten a head start on things such as fertilizing or aerating your lawn, but if not, that’s a good place to start. Trimming any bushes and vegetation to ensure nothing is rubbing against the side of your home can save you from having to repair scratches or re-paint in the near future. Replanting flowers, or nurturing the soil for your perennials is a nice final touch to add some beauty to your landscape

Tackle these tasks in small increments, or set aside one weekend to power through it all. Either way, the fun spring activities will be much more enjoyable knowing your home maintenance is done.
