Having a detailed approach to your search for a new home will always help you find the perfect fit for you and your family. Home buying is a very emotional time. People often impulse buy when they are looking for a home, only to discover later that it was not everything they expected. To avoid this from happening, start your home buying process by answering the following questions first. Once you have the answers, you can use them to find the perfect home in your preferred Edmonton neighbourhood that meets all of your needs.

Which Area Of The City Would You Like To Live In?

Everyone has an area in Edmonton they would prefer to live in. Having preferences is human nature. The first thing to do is establish which quadrant of the city you would most like to live in. Next, narrow down your search to your preferred neighbourhoods in that area. This will reduce a lot of time and effort in your home search by eliminating all of the options outside of your chosen area.

How Close Should You Live From Family and Friends?

Decide how close you wish to live to your family and friends. If driving isn't an issue, you will have a broader area to choose from when searching for a home. If being close is very important, you can restrict the area in which you are looking.

How Far Will You Need To Travel For Work?

Your commute to work should be a factor in picking out a new home. Make sure you're comfortable with the amount of time it will take to get to and from work each day. Consider the route you wish to travel and how easy that route is to access from your potential new home.

You will want to make sure that shopping and entertainment options are close for convenience. Drive around any areas you are interested in and see what types of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues are close by. This can make a difference in your home selection.

Consider how close the nearest medical facilities are located from the home. Parents should review the schools in the area along with other options, such as daycare and after school activities. You may also want to check the area for a library, community centre, or other activities that you enjoy.

What Type Of Home Will Fit Your Needs?

Decide on the type of residence that you need (things like the number of bedrooms or bathrooms) before you begin to shop. Ask yourself questions like:

    • Are you interested in a new home or a resale home?
    • Do you want a specific home style, such as a single family or duplex style home?
    • Would you prefer an attached or detached garage?
    • Are you interested in specific room sizes?
    • Do you need amenities, such as a main floor laundry room or a home office?
    • Do you want an exterior made of brick or siding?

By figuring out exactly what you want in a home, you will be able to narrow your choices and purchase exactly what you’re looking for.

Does The Home You Want Fit Within Your Budget?

The most important thing you must consider is your budget. Make sure both the community and home you select actually fit within your means. Becoming financially strained because you purchased a home that was too expensive will only cause you hardship. Take a good look at your budget and make a point to stick to it while shopping for a new home.

These six simple questions can provide you with great insight into what type of home you will want, where you want it located, and if you will be truly happy in that area. Every potential homeowner should take the time to answer these questions before beginning the home buying process.
